Clowns
Clowns is based on my experience of being an artist-in-residence at the Coney Island Clown Skool. The first week of the Skool was the same week that a new administration was elected.
The beauty of the clowns contrasted sharply with the cruelty of the new administration, and inspired my story.
Jamie, one of the students, who is a seamstress and makeup artist, sees ICE take away her neighbors, a mother and her baby. Two other students, Ocean, an acrobat, and Miss Kiss, a burlesque dancer, have seen ICE arrest people on the Coney Island boardwalk. The three of them decide to distract ICE on the boardwalk with their clown acts, to let people hide or escape.
The consequences of their actions and what follows form the basis of my story.
