Ceridwen and her mockingbird familiar Belanos, and Michael and his snake familiar Aval, arrive safely in the New World, where they are sold as indentured servants. The Tribe contacts them through dreams and visions, and tells them that they have also escaped to the New World and formed a traveling circus. Michael is attacked and brutalized because of his love of men, and Ceridwen and Michael escape to join their Tribe on a stolen horse.
The tribe is frightened and puzzled by the behavior of their audience, the mortals. Then they meet Adam, a mortal they can trust, who teaches them to live in safety. Ceridwen and Adam fall in love and have a baby girl, Branna.
The Tribe travels safely for many decades, and Adam ages and dies. The Tribe vows to always remember Adam and follow his rules, but will they?
